Check-Out Policy

    Students are allowed to have two books out at atime. Special permission is granted for additional books to be taken out for researchassignments or other specific needs. Parents may check out a book by using their child'slibrary number. Books check out for a period of four (4) weeks. We feel this is ample timeto read the book. All library materials must be checked out before leaving the library.

Lost or Damaged Books

   If the book is lost, you will becharged a replacement cost. Most of our books are library editions, meant to take heavyuse, and are not the trade editions sold in bookstores.

    If a book is damaged beyond repair, please makearrangements to pay a replacement cost for the book as soon as possible. Please do notattempt to repair the book yourself. We use special book tape and glue, which resist heatand won't discolor. Please return the book, show us the damaged portion and we will repairit.

    Lost or damaged books are to be paid for before students cancheck out library books.

Overdue Books (Fines)

        It is theresponsibility of the students to return their books on time. A fine of ten cents a day(school days only) will be assessed until the book is returned. Fines must be paid beforethe student may check out another book.

Student Choice

        Each six weeksour students are required to read and pass quizzes on books from our school's AcceleratedReader Quiz List. The students are encouraged to read a variety of books, both fiction andnonfiction. The library staff is available to help the students select books that interestthem and that are on their reading level. Student choice is part of the selection process.Our goal is to instill a love of reading.

Class Visits

     The students are scheduledthrough their reading teachers to come to the library for book checkout. Students may cometo the library with teacher permission. Many students may ask for a pass from theirhomeroom teacher and come to the library before first period. Classroom teachers mayschedule the library for research/computer activities.

VirginiaYoung Readers

   The purpose of the Virginia YoungReaders program is to encourage students to read a variety of contemporary books. Thesebooks have been published within the last five years. Students are encouraged to read atleast four books from the list of ten. In February 2004, students will be invited to voteon their favorite Virginia Young Readers book for the 2003 - 2004 school year.

   Battle of the Books is a summer readingprogram. Any group of five students may form a team and register at PVMS Library. Teamsmust read the ten books on the reading list and prepare for a tournament stylecompetition. Teams will be asked to respond to questions on a particular book and earnpoints by identifying the title and author. The required books are:

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH My Side of the Mountain
Belle Prater's Boy Ella Enchanted
Twenty and Ten It's Like This, Cat
Ghost Canoe Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
